Who SDF is best for
- Toddlers and young children with early cavities
- Children with disabilities or special healthcare needs
- Kids with high anxiety about drilling or shots
- Children with several cavities that can't all be treated in one visit
How Silver Diamine Fluoride works
SDF combines two active ingredients. Silver kills the bacteria that cause decay and strengthens the softened dentin. Fluoride hardens the tooth and helps prevent new decay. Together they can stop an existing cavity from progressing and reduce tooth sensitivity.
What parents should know before choosing SDF
SDF permanently stains the decayed part of the tooth black — that is a sign it's working. Healthy enamel is not stained. Because SDF stops decay but doesn't rebuild the tooth, some teeth may still need a filling or crown later for appearance or function. We'll show you exactly which teeth we'd treat and what they will look like.

Silver Diamine Fluoride in Stonecrest: questions parents ask
Does Silver Diamine Fluoride hurt?
No. SDF is brushed onto the tooth in minutes. There's no drilling and no numbing shot.
Does SDF stain teeth?
Yes — it permanently darkens the decayed part of the tooth. Healthy enamel is not stained. A tooth-colored filling or crown can cover the area later if you prefer.
Is SDF a replacement for fillings?
Sometimes. SDF can stop many cavities from growing, but some teeth still need a filling or crown later to restore shape and function.
How many SDF treatments does my child need?
Many cavities need more than one application over time. We'll recheck the teeth at follow-up visits and re-apply when needed.
